CoinWeek Giveaway # 620 Sponsored by…CoinWeek1983-84-R Vatican The 620th CoinWeek Coin Giveaway

1983-84-R Vatican “Holy Year” Silver 500 Lire
PLUS a 1938-R San Marino Silver 5 Lire

CoinWeek Giveaway #620 features two remarkable European silver coins that showcase religious history and civic symbolism through exceptional artistry and preservation. Together, these pieces highlight the enduring appeal of Vatican and San Marino coinage among modern collectors.

The first coin is the 1983–84 Vatican Holy Year Silver 500 Lire, certified by PCGS as MS-68 (Toned). Issued to commemorate the Extraordinary Jubilee of Redemption, which ran from March 25, 1983, through Easter Sunday of 1984, this non-circulating silver coin reflects a moment of profound spiritual significance within the Catholic Church. Struck during the papacy of Pope John Paul II, the coin is composed of .835 fine silver, weighs 11.00 grams, and measures approximately 29 mm in diameter.

Its obverse design, created by renowned Italian sculptor Enrico Manfrini, is rich in symbolism and detail. It depicts Jesus Christ Triumphant, overcoming evil, surrounded by pilgrims and iconic religious landmarks, including St. Peter’s Basilica, reinforcing the global and redemptive theme of the Jubilee. The reverse bears the papal coat of arms of John Paul II, lending the coin both historical authority and aesthetic balance. With a limited mintage of approximately 130,000 pieces, this issue is significantly scarcer than many modern commemoratives. Its market value, generally ranging from $80 to over $100 in uncirculated  to $15-$200 in Gem condition. This coin is a MS-68, making it especially attractive to collectors of Vatican, papal, and modern world coinage.

The second offering is the 1938-R San Marino Silver 5 Lire, certified MS-65 (Toned). This coin represents a key moment in San Marino’s numismatic history, as 1938 marked the final year of standard circulation for this denomination. Struck at the Rome Mint, indicated by the “R” mintmark, the coin is composed of .835 fine silver, weighs 5.00 grams, and has a diameter of 23 mm.

Designed by Italian engraver Enrico Saroldi, the obverse features an allegorical female figure personifying the Republic of San Marino, embodying strength and national identity. The reverse displays a plough, olive branch, and fasces, symbols of labor, peace, and unity, alongside the Latin motto “Fortis in Temperantia” (“Strength through Moderation”). With a mintage of 120,000, this issue is increasingly scarce, particularly in high-grade condition, and is prized by collectors of pre-war European silver and microstate coinage.

Together, these two toned silver coins offer historical depth, artistic excellence, and strong collector demand, making Giveaway #620 an exceptional opportunity for numismatists.  Merry Christmas to all !
