1864 Two Cent 2c Large Motto AU53 PCGS

The 1864 Large Motto Two-Cent coin is a remarkable piece of American numismatic history,  both for its bold design and the pivotal moment in which it was struck. Graded AU53 by PCGS, this example falls into the coveted “About Uncirculated” category, offering sharp detail with light wear that still preserves much of the coin’s original character.

Introduced during the Civil War, the Two-Cent coin was born from crisis. The war had created a national coin shortage, especially of small denominations. To remedy this, Congress authorized the two-cent piece in April 1864, struck in bronze, a departure from the copper-nickel compositions of earlier small coins. It became the first U.S. coin to bear the now-iconic motto “In God We Trust.”

Interestingly, 1864 saw two motto varieties: Small Motto and Large Motto. The Large Motto, adopted later that year, was more readable and better aligned with public sentiment. Most surviving examples are of the Large Motto type, though the Small Motto remains the scarcer and more elusive subtype.

The AU53 grade is significant. It indicates that this coin retains nearly all its original detail, with just the slightest wear on high points like the shield’s edges or motto scroll. Luster may be diminished, but overall eye appeal remains strong, making it an ideal choice for type set collectors who want historical integrity without the Mint State premium.

Collectors value the 1864 Large Motto for its symbolic and design significance. Not only was it the first coin to formally express national faith, but it also launched the short-lived Two-Cent series, which ran only until 1873. The bold shield design by James B. Longacre, paired with the patriotic motto, resonates with both Civil War historians and coin enthusiasts.

As demand continues to grow for mid-19th century U.S. coinage with historical significance, AU-graded examples like this one are gaining attention in collector forums.
