Struck between 591 and 628 AD, this silver drachm was issued during the reign of Khosrow II, also known as Khosrow Parviz, “the Victorious.” Widely regarded as the last great King of Kings of Iran, Khosrow II ruled at the height of Sasanian power. His reign was defined by political upheaval, military ambition, and cultural achievement. After briefly losing his throne, he regained it with the aid of the Byzantine emperor Maurice, then launched a series of campaigns that temporarily brought much of the eastern Roman world under Persian control.

The coin itself is a classic representation of Sasanian numismatic art. On the obverse, the crowned bust of Khosrow II faces right, displaying regal authority through stylized but expressive engraving. The reverse features the sacred Zoroastrian fire altar, flanked by two attendants, with a star and crescent symbolizing divine favor and royal legitimacy. These designs reflect the deeply intertwined nature of religion and kingship in the Sasanian Empire.

This drachm is especially appealing to collectors because Sasanian silver coins combine strong historical significance with affordability and visual impact. Many examples, like this one, display excellent detail and attractive natural toning that enhances their ancient character.
