The 608th CoinWeek Coin Giveaway

1963-A $2.00 U.S. Note Red Seal CU-65 EPQ PMG (Fr#1514)

This Series 1963-A $2 legal tender note with bright red seals and numbers has been graded as Choice Uncirculated-65 EPQ by PMG. It is an excellent addition to any high grade collection!

The 1963 $2 Red Seal United States Note is a common but historically significant piece of currency, representing the final issuance of this type of note before the treasury phased out United States notes on 1971.

The “Red Seal” identifies the note as a “United States Note,” a direct obligation of the U.S. Treasury, a different type of currency than the Federal Reserve Notes we use today. These notes, featuring Thomas Jefferson and his home, Monticello, also contain the “In God We Trust” motto for the first time on the $2 Legal Tender note, marking a transitional period in American monetary history.

Currency Highlights:
Issued beginning in 1963.
Housed in an inert Mylar currency holder by PMG. Graded as Crisp Uncirculated-65 EPQ by PMG.
Friedberg #1514.

United States notes were adopted for circulation during the Civil War in 1862 in denominations from $1 through $1,000. The $2 denomination remained when we switched over to small size notes in 1928 and continued until the early 1960s when the denomination was discontinued. The “deuce” was revived in 1976 as a Federal Reserve Note. Although they are still legal tender, their red seals and serial numbers make them great collector’s items.

Series 1963 $2 United States notes were printed in fairly small numbers by today’s standards, and they saw heavy usage until the type was discontinued in the 1960s. GEM $2 Red Seals notes are a great part of history that easily add to any collection.
